How Path of Exile boss farming profit is calculated
Farming a pinnacle or Uber boss in Path of Exile is a bet: you pay a fixed cost in fragments or invitations to open the fight, and in return you get a random handful of drops from that boss's loot pool. Whether it's actually worth doing depends on two things the game never tells you directly — how much the entry costs right now, and how much the possible drops are worth right now. This tool pulls both from live community market data so you can compare every fight on the same footing, in your league, instead of trusting a guide that was written three leagues ago.
Each boss card shows an average profit per run, which is the expected value across many kills: the sum of every drop's chance multiplied by its market floor price, minus the cost of entry. Over a long farming session, that average is what you actually converge toward — even though most individual kills return nothing from the pool and occasionally one drops something big.
Pinnacle, Uber, and Nightmare bosses
The estimator groups encounters into three categories, each ranked separately because their entry costs and loot pools aren't comparable:
- Pinnacle bosses are the base versions of the endgame fights — the Searing Exarch, the Eater of Worlds, the Maven, Sirus, and so on. Their entry cost is moderate and they're the bread-and-butter of most farming strategies.
- Uber bosses are the amplified versions, opened with four fragments. They cost far more to access but drop the rarest, most valuable uniques in the game, which is why their variance is enormous.
- Nightmare bosses are the Tier 17 map bosses. Their fragment-style rewards scale hard with the map's increased item quantity, so the same fight can be worth very different amounts depending on how juiced your map is.
Why worst, average, and best — not one number
A single "profit" figure hides the thing that matters most about boss farming: variance. That's why every card shows three numbers. Worst is the run where nothing from the pool drops and you simply lose the entry cost. Average is the expected value described above. Best is the single most valuable outcome — the one big-ticket item — not the whole pool summed at once, because many pools can only ever yield one of several items per kill. Reading all three tells you not just whether a boss is profitable, but how swingy that profit is and how much capital you need to ride out the dry streaks.
Where the prices and drop rates come from
Live prices come from poe.ninja and poe.watch, refreshed roughly once an hour. For items whose value depends on a random roll — jewels with variable affixes, corrupted-implicit weapons — the tool deliberately uses the realistic floor price rather than a lucky-roll outlier, preferring poe.watch's dedicated "unidentified" price where it's published. Drop chances come from the Path of Exile Wiki and community guides; because Grinding Gear Games does not publish official drop rates, some values are careful estimates and are labelled as such directly on the card. Is boss farming the best way to make currency in Path of Exile?
It depends on your build, your budget, and the league's economy. Boss farming rewards a build that can kill fast and reliably, and enough starting capital to absorb a run of bad luck. This tool won't tell you it's the best strategy — it tells you what each fight is worth right now, so you can compare it against your own alternatives.
Why is the "best" outcome not the sum of the whole loot pool?
Because many boss loot pools are "one of several" — the fight guarantees, say, one of three possible items, not all three. Summing them would massively overstate the real ceiling of a single kill, so the tool reports the single most valuable item you can actually walk away with instead.
Can I trust the drop rates exactly?
Treat them as a well-sourced estimate, not gospel. GGG doesn't publish official rates, so confirmed numbers come from community sample data on the wiki and the rest are careful estimates, both labelled on the card. If your own experience differs, your sample is real data too — a correction is always welcome.
How do I account for how long a fight takes?
Each card has an editable time-per-run field that drives the "chaos per hour" rate next to it. Kill time is entirely gear- and build-dependent and GGG doesn't publish it, so the defaults are just starting points — plug in your own real numbers for an accurate hourly rate.
Why do the numbers change between visits?
Because they're live. Entry costs and drop values move constantly with the league economy, and the whole point of the tool is to reflect that rather than freeze a snapshot. Prices refresh about once an hour.
